Interview with Toralf Weisse:

Interim Management in the Logistics Sector

With more than 30 years of experience in the industrial, trade, and logistics sectors, Toralf Weisse is a seasoned expert in business process optimization, strategy development, and change management. He supports companies in shaping their organizational development and navigating complex transformation processes with a hands-on and pragmatic approach.

What motivated you to work in the logistics industry?

"I’m drawn to developing pragmatic solutions in challenging situations. As an interim manager, I can have a direct and immediate impact on a company’s performance—especially during critical phases such as project bottlenecks or transformation blockages. I find it fulfilling to achieve tangible results in a short time."

Market Developments and Challenges

What current trends do you see in the logistics industry that particularly challenge companies?

"Above all, digitization, automation, and the growing focus on sustainability place significant demands on companies. These developments bring profound changes—but also great opportunities. Add to that geopolitical uncertainties, volatile markets, and a growing shortage of skilled labor."

How do these trends affect day-to-day operations in logistics?

"Digitization enables data-driven decisions, automation reduces manual processes, and sustainability has become a real competitive factor. Medium-sized companies in particular often struggle with structured implementation—that’s where external support is essential. At the same time, the market demands more transparency, flexibility, and resilience—which significantly shifts the requirements."

Are there specific challenges where interim managers are especially in demand?

"Absolutely. Interim managers are particularly sought after for strategic realignment, turnarounds, IT implementations, or bridging vacancies. We're also valuable in the case of sudden disruptions—such as strikes, political crises, or cyberattacks—where our quick availability makes a big difference."

How does the work of an interim manager in logistics differ from other industries?

"Logistics is very dynamic—complex supply chains, time-critical processes, and heavy use of technology. Interim managers need to make fast decisions and bring operational excellence. Delivering value from day one is essential. Intercultural competence, negotiation skills with partners, and a global perspective are also especially important."

What skills and qualities are particularly important for an interim manager in this sector?

"Analytical thinking, flexibility, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of logistical processes. Most importantly: the ability to build trust quickly. Without team buy-in, change doesn’t happen. Interim leadership means acting with clear focus—and empathy."

How do you approach the optimization of supply chains and processes?

"I start with a thorough analysis—ideally on-site. Then we work with the client to develop tailored solutions—aligned with the company’s structure, culture, and market. Often, it’s not just technical challenges but structural or cultural ones that need to be addressed."

What role does change management play in this?

"A central one. New systems or processes only succeed when people are brought along. Change management creates acceptance and helps overcome resistance. That’s why I work closely with HR departments, works councils, and communication teams."

How important is the role of HR and attractive working conditions in this context?

"Very important. Since the pandemic, remote work has become highly valued—for office jobs, that’s a great option. But in warehouse or transport operations, it’s simply not possible. Here, creativity is needed—like flexible shift systems, training opportunities, or targeted benefits. We’re also seeing high turnover: if staff can get better conditions in, say, the medical technology sector, they’ll switch. Logistics companies must work on their employer attractiveness."

What common mistakes do companies in logistics make?

"Poor communication, unclear goals, or underestimating the impact of change. Interim managers bring an outside perspective, identify risks early, and implement proven practices. One common mistake is waiting too long before bringing in external support."

Future Outlook

How do you see the market for interim management in logistics evolving?

"Demand will rise. Companies are increasingly looking for flexible, immediately deployable expertise—especially in uncertain times. The growing complexity of challenges requires swift action and precise solutions. Interim management will be seen even more as a strategic tool."

What skills should interim managers further develop to stay competitive in the future?

"Digital skills, knowledge of sustainability, and strong change management abilities. As complexity grows, lifelong learning is essential. Communication skills and a willingness to innovate will also become more important—because change starts in the mind."

What advice would you give to companies considering hiring an interim manager?

"Define clear goals—and ensure cultural fit. Experience alone isn’t enough; human interaction is crucial. Interim management is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but a focused, high-impact intervention."

Is there a key insight you’d like to share with our readers?

"Technology is important—but without involving employees, success is out of reach. Transformation only works when people are on board. Even the best strategy will fail if the team isn’t engaged."

What motivates you personally in your daily work?

"Definitely my clients. I receive a great deal of appreciation and gratitude for what I do—and that’s my biggest source of motivation. When I see that I can truly make a difference, that’s incredibly fulfilling."

What do you do in your free time to relax or keep developing yourself?

"I love reading—currently about the history and present of the Arab world. It helps me personally, but also creates a deeper connection with many colleagues in logistics who come from that region. Understanding cultural backgrounds makes it easier to connect with people—and that’s a big advantage in everyday business."
